Position Summary:
  Under general direction of the Facility Maintenance Manager, this is a Supervisory / ”Working Forman” position responsible for supervising, planning, coordinating, and executing maintenance and construction projects for Zoo rides and water quality facilities.

Skills Needed:

  • Supervises and directs zoo maintenance staff. 
  • Prepares, prioritizes and assigns daily work schedules.  
  • Oversees all maintenance for Zoo rides, including safety, inspections, PM’s, repairs and regulations.
  • Ensures that all water chemistry levels are properly maintained, as well as associated equipment
  • Works in the field, executing work orders, repairs and projects (The majority of the work day).
  • Reviews work and evaluates employee work performance
  • Plans, prioritizes, and coordinates maintenance programs and development projects.
  • Maintains an inventory of tools, equipment and supplies
  • Develops and recommends capital improvements, equipment acquisition, and other improvements
  • Inspects and monitors facilities and equipment and for public safety, maintenance, repair, and/or replacement needs.
  • Administers and enforces Zoo and departmental rules and regulations.  Communicates and instructs personnel of appropriate rules, regulations, procedures, and policies.
  • Assists in the hiring, transferring, promotion, and disciplining of personnel under the supervision of this position.
  • Trains personnel on job related matters including job safety and specific job skills.  Ensures the personnel comply with established safety requirements and work rules.
  • Prepares and maintains maintenance records and reports.
  • Attends and participates in Safety Committee and other meetings as needed. Conducts area safety inspections and leads monthly safety walk
  • Coordinates maintenance, construction, and repair activities with Animal, Food Service, Education, and other Zoo Departments
  • Develops and maintains positive relations and communications with Zoo staff and the general public
  • And other related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to work on Engines, Hydraulics, and large pumps
  • Basic electrical skills and troubleshooting abilities
  • Ability to complete projects in a reasonable time frame, to the complete satisfaction of the customer
  • Deal courteously and tactfully with employees, peers, superiors, and the general public
  • Working knowledge of Hand and Power Tools
  • Considerable Knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.
  • Read blueprints, mechanical drawings, and other diagrams
  • Use of computer and basic programs (Outlook, Excel, Word, etc)
Education / Experience:
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent,
  • Four years of experience in progressively responsible general maintenance operations (Prefer one of which should be at a lead or supervisory level)
  • Require a minimum of three years experience in water quality or maintenance of rides/machinery.
  • Prefer Journeyman level of experience and education
  • Prefer welding ability
  • Prefer electrical knowledge
  • Prefer Automotive/Maintenance mechanic experience
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to work outdoors in temperature and humidity extremes
  • Must be able to lift in excess of 50 lbs
  • Must be able to work weekends and holidays.
