ANKOLE CATTLE
Bos taurus

Range:
Native to eastern Africa brought over to Europe in the early 1900’s and North America in the 1970’s.

Ankole, or Wastusi cattle are most recognized for their enormous horns, measuring around 8’ tip to tip. These horns are used not only for a defense weapon against predators but also for a cooling system. Since they are accustomed to warm weather their blood circulates to the tip of the horn to dispense heat before it returns to their body. The Ankole’s horns may be straight or curved.  Their color varies from red, black, brown, white, or grey; the color can range from single colored coat to multi colored.





Habitat: Forests and meadows.
Diet: Grasses and leaves.
Status: N/A (IUCN).
Approximate Dimensions of Adult:

Bull Weight: 1,000 - 1,600 lbs.
Cow Weight: 900 - 1,200 lbs.

Lifespan: Up to 36 years in captivity.
Reproduction & Offspring: 9-11 month gestation period. Single calf that are especially alert and are capable of running along with their mothers and the herd within a short time.
