Florida Boardwalk Animal Fact Sheet
DUSKY SQUIRRELFISH
Sargocentron vexillarium

Range:
Western Atlantic: Bermuda and Florida, to northern South America. This is a ray-finned fish belonging to the Squirrelfish family.
Habitat: Inshore reefs and tide pools, where it hides in small recesses.
Diet: Various crustaceans, the animal is a hunter low in the food chain.
Status: Common, but rarely seen due to their nocturnal nature.
Approximate Dimensions of Adult:

Length: Up to 18 cm.

Lifespan: Unknown in the wild.
Reproduction & Offspring:

Squirrelfish, like many other marine organisms reproduce by external fertilization and do not provide any parental care. They typically have two breeding seasons per year.
